I read in the last Aust Muscle Car Mag that if the new VZ GTO Pontiac sales take off in the States, the Yanks may want to build the Monaro in the Future, so they can build it more to there own performance levels.

As the base model HOLDEN Monaro still has the LS1 & you have to get the HSV to have LS2, the Pontiac will come standard with the LS2 (6.0)
If the Monaro is lost the the Yanks it will be a big blow to Holden's market share, but to loose the Monaro name & it's heritage to the Yanks would be hard to take.

Come on Holden,

Keep OUR ! Monaro

It only sells in small numbers here anyway, so would hardly be a blow to their market share even if sales did slip a bit.
Built here or there means nothing to heritage, and it would still be called Monaro and the basic car would be designed here, so i dont see the problem.
Remember that the almighty Torana was originally just a humble Vauxhall Viva.

Did you live in Australia when the FIRST Monaro came out ? True Australian Holden Fans wouldn't want the Monaro name use on a car built in another Country !

Yes the 4 Cyl only, but I dont remember the Viva with a 6 Cyl or V8 in it, or looking like an XU1 or A9X !

Holden took a poor car (viva) and made a great one out of it.

Is the V in V-Car because your a Pom ?

Drive On !

Hey, chill out Rob, you sound like you think im having a go at you, not at all mate.
I was born and raised in Perth, and id say i was driving Monaros (have movies) while you were still at school!
My first Holden was an FC in 1965, followed by an EH, then i went to the UK for a year in 1970/71.
Then had an HG Prem, followed by a VB SL 253, a VC HDT Brock #25, a VH SL/E 253, a VN Calais 5.0, and now a VX Calais 5.7 with many other cars, Chevs etc. in between.
Also, if you know about Holdens, youd know that the Commodore is built on the (in GM talk) V-Car platform.
Plus, if it wasnt for the yanks picking up the Monaro for their GTO, we probably wouldnt have a Monaro at all come 2006 with the VE.
What would you rather have, a Monaro built in the states, or none at all?

Ponceiac agreed with Holden to take around 16000 cars a year (Dont know if this includes Chevy's Lumina) they had their best ever month in Sept selling 2678 cars, the cars styling changes some for the new car, some are nice, some belong on the Ford Mustang/XB/XC
I think you'll find have been insisted by GM's managment to suit Ponceiac, and the car they've created hasn't had the response they were after in yankland.

So as the yanks have the biggest market share, Holden may be bullied by GM to build the car in the US.and to add insult to injury, buy it back.

I also reckon that the base model Monaro will receive the LS2 for the 2006 model along with proberly the SS commodores, just not for the yanks but us as well.

I'm also think i'm right in saying (before the current generation) that the monaro has 100% record at bathurst!!!
that's whats called heritage, before HOLDEN built the Torana i didn't remember any Vauxhall Viva's winning Bathurst, alot of people in england say that,a Torana is a Viva, and they say that because they know no better. Torana's also have a very good hertiage and i suppose poms just want to latch on to the Torana's success.
Rob's right i've been serching in the scrapyards for that elusive XU1 viva and i just can't find him ! they're just to hard to come by, i'm aware of the chevy cam am, a viva with a 327 (i think) but they're still not in England.

Building the Monaro only makes sense for the yanks, they want it that way, so they can build want they want for they're own market, i can't see anything changing in the performance stakes except maybe for the 427 (yes please gimme, gimme, gimme) they will change the styling forever and it'll look and handle like any other yank.

Unfortunately, whether you blokes like to believe it on not, the first Torana was a Vauxhall Viva.
The first 6 cyl Torana just had a longer nose and slightly different styling.
The HA model was called Viva, but the second one, HB was called Torana.
The LC followed, and the rest is (dreamtime) history now.
Ofcourse Holden developed it heaps more to become the GTR and the legendary XU1, but like i said, its started out as a Vauxhall Viva.

By the way, i saw one of those South African Chev Firenza CamAm cars with the Camaro Z28 302 at the GM Day here in Perth a few weeks ago, very nice bit of gear, but i bet it would be a bit of a handful.

G’Day Ross,

Sorry to sound rude mate, but some times I let my heart rule my mouth.

Respect for (1) being an Aussie & (2)owning so many nice Holden’s, especially the VC Brock. I had just left school when they came out, oh how I wanted one of those, still would like one.

We could argue on forever, but I won’t.

I’ll just say that I’m proud to be an Aussie, love anything Australian, most of all HOLDEN! Just wouldn’t like to loose OUR Monaro name to another Country and the fact that now OUR Monaro has come back we may have to buy one that was NOT MADE IN AUSTRALIA. As an Aussie you would know that we love to promote anything Australian Made!

No disrespect to England, but I have lived her in the UK for almost 12 yrs & can’t wait to get back to Holden Country. My favourite video is, the 50 Years Of Holden and I love the old ads. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I see that Caltex ad with the Monaro’s racing down the beach to rescue the Girl on the capsized Catamaran. That takes me back to my younger days & my first love for Holden. When everyone in my class had Pop Stars covering their Schoolbooks, I had Monaro’s & Torana’s. Sorry there I go again.

All the best,
Rob.

P.s Last meeting at the Ace we had one of those South African Chev Firenza, so it may turn up again hay.

I lived in SA when those Can Am's & Capri V8's were new cars, almost bought one in '76 but bought an RX-2 Coupe' instead.

They were 150MPH cars but had weedy brakes and wandered around in stock form. A little like a small version of a Ford Fairmont GT.[had one of these monsters in '88]

Got to luv musclecars
