DOH! Broken Odometer
Discussion
Hi Guys,
Went to get some takeaway tonight and just as I left the heavens opened. I was tootling through the village at 30mph quite hapily until the Speedo suddenly dropped to zero. No problems with the car itself, just the speedo. It came back after a minute or so. However on my return journey I got nothing from it what so ever. Without a Haynes Manual (which is on order b.t.w) I'm running blind. I'll try to have a look tomorrow when it's hopefully better weather. Anyone able to offer any assistance to either remedy the situation or get me limping through until I can get it fixed properly.
I guess this one prefers the wamer, dryer climates of its homeland
TIA.

Mine is the same, I will be sorting it out over the next week or so. The problem is the speed converter behind the speedo in my car. This is the bit they put in to convert from KPH to MPH. Bit of a job as you probably have to take the clocks out to get to it. I will try and get some pictures of the process so that you can see what I do to fix it.
Can you not adjust the PPK (Pulses per Kilometre) using Hptuners?
That is what is done down here to change the speedo when you put a different diff ratio in the car.
Then you could rip the offending bit of added on electronics out of the thing!!! Unless of course the PPK doesn't have that amount of adjustment in it or it affects the RPM readout too???? I don't know if this will work...might be something for ukhsv to mess around with..probably need a GPS too...just to confirm those speeds are reading corretly!!
I am just offering suggestions.
Taking the dash out involves removing the centre console fascia and stereo...I watched a trained Holden guy do it in about 10 minutes once!! just to swap over a dash for me....Putting a HSV dash in an SS.
Is the same fix applied to the Monaro...How high does your dash read too?
On my VT II SS it was 220kmh. (250kmh with the HSV dash)
On the VY II it is 240kmh.

I am sure there is a reason that the speed converter was put in. My speedo reads up to 250 and the odometer reeds in miles, I suppose the rest of the car thinks it is still in Kilometres. A friend of mine has a 350Z that had a speed converter in. It seems to be the thing to do to convert to MPH.
Thanks to everyone who replied and gave advise. Managed to find the speed convertor behind the dash. I tested the PCB & components as best I could and couldn't find any problems with it. I resoldered the joints of the larger components (resistors & capacitors, etc). Note - There are lots of surface mounted components that I left well alone. All working now Once I get some time, I'll write up the procedure and include photos then I'll put it on my website for future reference.
Thanks again all.
Thanks again all.
