Hello from down under, i moved to Perth over 2 years ago. Once my 457 visa was granted in june 2013 i bought a 2009 VE ss ute. I work in the earthmoving/ mining game. basically work is dropping off and i now have thoughts of returning to the UK. Of course i love my ute, and was wondering how many utes there are in the UK, or how easy is it to bring mine with me?

Whats tax and insurance like on these cars?

Mine is a SS, 6.0 L98 motor. Manual box. it has the 20'' GTS rims, and i fitted a clubsport front bumper. Stage 4 customs cams from Faraone Engines, full 3'' Di Filippo system with 4'' dump pipes, underdrive pulley, OTR induction, and remap sees it at 502 hp at the wheels. easily embarasses GTS and maloos!

Apart from ours, I don't know of another white VE here, so you will halve the rarity value, if you bring it in. There are a couple of black ones around.

You may want to get a hard lid before coming back, as they are expensive to airfreight over. Fill the back up with spares too. The cost of freighting to the UK is crippling.

I see you have the HSV R8 front bumper cover on yours, which is more common than the Holden front end here, so if you want the rarity value, put the old PU back on. smile

Cool, wonder if it will easily embarrass my GTS or Maloo?

Welcome back.

(Although I really don't know why you would want to come back to this cold, wet, overcrowded land that is now run by Germans, French, Belgians and a smattering of Scots)

I thought the UK was owned by Middle Eastern and Russian billionaires.

I have a VZ SSZ that has yet to be registered in the UK. If you have room for a silver front HSV Maloo bumper that would fit it I would be eternally grateful!

wink

dimmamike. We do have the odd competition over here, and the odd dyno day, so you will be invited to verify those dyno sheets. wink

Nice to have another ute over.

hi all! nothing is set in stone yet lads, just toying with the idea really if things get shady with work. It appears the UK construction industry is booming, thats my draw card to head home. I sold the orginal front bumper on gumtree unfortunatley. Has anyone any experience of importing a car from australia?

Importing is easy. If it is your personal vehicle, and you're moving your normal home to the UK after being abroad for more than 185 days, and you have owned and used the vehicle for more than six months, then your car can be imported free of VAT and duty.

I haven't dealt with the registration process for a while and I know it has changed. You will need a NOVA registration, and SVA the vehicle before it can be registered here.

When I brought my Maloo back, it was dead easy. No tax to pay as a personal import, but you do need all the necessary documentation to prove you have lived in Oz and owned the car there for over 6 months.

You then have to get it over here, cost me about £1500, RORO. Then get it tested. Its a commercial vehicle and personal import, so I believe the criteria are less onerous than with a car, but you have to check the new requirements with VOSA. I found the guys at the local VOSA testing station to be really helpful. With mine they checked emissions, weight, brakes and lights and that was it. They didn't even bother with the kph speedo or fog light. As I said, there's is now an IVA which is different to the old SVA that I did.

Whatever the new rules I will hazard a guess that our rules are no where near as pedantic as the Ozzy authorities.

Shame about selling the SS front bar. I prefer it over the HSV offering.

Ok, 3 speed? Or 4 speed manual. Or was that one of the early 5 speeds?

Looked a bit like an XD initially.

What spec?

XD ,XE ,XF are basically the same car. XD has leaf sprung rear. Xf never had a v8 option, 4.1 six only.
Mine is a C4 3 speed auto 351 Cleveland CHI alloy heads, matching single plane manifold, Roller cam, MSD ignition, Demon 650 carb etc

Just going through the IVA and registration process now.

It's quite straight forward as long as you can prove ownership and citizenship in Oz. Cars that are 10 years old just need registering. As for yours you will need to change the speedo from KPH to MPH, stick a rear fog light on along with a fog light switch that illuminates and is wired up so when the main power is off the fog resets to off. Any head lamp covers, tinting, additions to the original cars body work have to be removed plus the metal Oz plates have to go.

I have been working through a company called shipmycar who are most helpful. It doesn't happen quickly though so expect it to take about 2/3 months as our Licencing Agency are 8 weeks behind in issuing the IVA test appointments. For IVA and registration budget for around £500 if you do it yourself, add another £400 if you use a company to do it for you.
