I noticed at the weekend that whilst sitting in town traffic every now and again I get a clunk from the rear of the car as the clutch bites.
I also noticed that sometimes for a millisecond the TC graphic is displayed on the dash but vanishes very quickly. Anyone had anything similar or is this the start of a problem?

Completely normal. A monaro foible that's all part of the magic of owning one of our cars laugh

The clunk is. Not sure about the TC bit.

You need a Tru trac diff Sir.

Stock LSD you get a cluck and low traction message flash up on the dash. A clunk without the low traction message = something broken (ask me how I know hehe)

Ok fair enough, I assumed it was normal because...nothing was wrong if that makes sense but I was thinking there was perhaps a mount needing replaced or something but fair enough smile thanks

Gareth is right however, changing the LSD seems to cure the problem for most people. From what I've read it's not 100% guaranteed fix but it depends on what you want from your car.

When the stock LSD works it works well, but then there are times when it doesn't. So if pulling big number 11's or drifting is your thing then a replacement LSD is a given.

The Lady is correct. If you dont want the clunk fit more friction modifier (FM) but then you might get 1's not 11's.

I cant ever recall getting the TC message (except before I did the E40 patch to the PCM)

Yes an old thread but felt this was helpful information , i’ve spent a lot of time changing diff fluid or adding friction modifier , but i have now change the diff oil to syntrax lsd 75w/140 , so much better plus no klonking , put in about 1.8 litres , easy job to do , and no traction issues of one wheel spinning , i put no friction modifier in , the RP i had before was not that old only changed last year , and had only been in there for around 2000 miles but was not working very well and klunking a lot , i’ve driven car a fair bit since changing it , it is still working very well , i ordered from Opieoils

That's very useful info. For the record I have the clunk ( 04 Cv8 ) , but only really noticable when the car is properly warm.

Always used to use Castrol SAF-XA on the older cars with no friction modifier, looks like this stuff has superseded it.

I changed my diff oil on Tuesday, decided to use Morris Lubricants LODEXOL XFS 80w140. Took it for a good run after and not a whisper never mind clunk from the rear. No additional FM was used either.
On my first Monaro, I used the Redline equivalent that seems so highly rated, but that clunked more than before the change and it needed a good dose of FM to quieten it down!
So I highly recommend Morris Lubricants LODEXOL XFS 80w140, but it cost nearly £50 for just 2 litres.
Next job, box oil. smile

As my diff was klonking it ended up by klonking from diff to box , now the diff is sorted it’s much quieter all round , well much quieter more accurately no klonk at all , 35£ at opieolis for 2 lites plus about 5£ to deliver if you spend over 55£ ? ie buy engine oil delivery is free

I've read a lot of comments on here and facebook about how good certain oils are because they have cured the klunk but they never actually say the diff locks up as it should as well. I had the Klunk some years ago and monkfish changed the oil to royal purple from then on I've had no Klunk and get perfect 11's .
That said I would be interested to know what oil to use other than rp in future servicing but only ones that give the correct operation of the lsd.

This is very true! But for me personally and how I drive my car on the road, I'd prefer a quiet diff that doesn't sound like its going to explode after a motorway run even if that means I can't make perfect 11's.
Totally get you though.

I have not tried to get a set of 11 but i’m not getting a single wheel spinning up and it appears to be driving and working as normal , i would think if it’s letting one spin up i would know by now but i’ve not tested the point

I'm ashamed to say I've never tried to draw a set of 11s! However, the Syntrax removed all of the clunk - low speed and turning noises.

It's not really about leaving 11's that's just a way about demonstrating that the lsd is locking up as it should under those conditions but it should also be working in other driving conditions as well

Yeah, I sorta get that thumbup

I should really have a try and see if my diff is 100% functional.

The standard diff is junk even when in good condition. If its clunking, yes, some oil may quieten it, but then it wont lock.
The cones break.
