My noisy ripshifter - update
Discussion
Whilst my ripshifter gave a better gearchange than the standard item, I've never been fully happy with it. Main problems were the grinding and very loud 'buzzing' noise it made at speed, and the excessive 'fore and aft' movement on the lever. With the problem getting worse, I decided it was about time to take out the centre console, and get underneath the car, to see how well it had been installed. Oh dear.....
Upon removing the console it was obvious that the lever itself was loose where it connects to the actuating mechanism. In fact it was very loose - no threadlock had been used, and both bolts had come loose, the bottom allen bolt being about a 1/3rd of the way out! No threadlock had been used on the stop bolts that restrict the front and back movement of the lever either - front one loose! The bolts that bolt the ripshifter on top of the box - the front 2 that are difficult to access without dropping the box - one of them loose, and the other one hardly even screwed into the thread!!! FFS!!
Ended up re-installing the whole thing myself, properly, using plenty of threadlock. Guess what Christmas present I'm going to buy for a certain Holden 'specialist'.....
I also noticed that the collar of the ripshifter was very close to the transmission tunnel opening, on the righthand side. This is the cause of what I thought was an exhaust knocking noise under heavy load! Cured it by opening up the transmission hole a little (about 1cm) on the right hand side.
So now the ripshifter gearchange is the best it has ever been, and I've got rid of the knocking noise at last!
