Top Gear 8pm Sunday - VXR on Pendine Sands!
Discussion
mmm ... I shall be watching this with apprehension.
I think they have 'tested' cars on Pendine sands before (Aston or Jag??) where the cars struggled for grip on the sand. The Monaros traction control is not that sophisticated ... lets hope Jezza doesn't slag it off for this reason, or best ... turns off the TC!
Mind you, in the past, Clarkson has said good things about the Monaro, and he seems to like it.

What a superb result! I think it's fair to say they loved it!
I've recorded the episode on MP4.
Some quotes:
Introduction
Rather handsome looking brute
2 big doors, 4 big seats, a big boot and a big engine
gearbox from a big piece of earth moving equipment
power comes in big lazy yawns
60mph = 1500 rpm in top - its just idling - fat ozzie slacker
it corners too, which is odd because its not what you would call sophisticated
some European cars have gearboxes with 11 programmable settings - this has a 6 gears and a clutch
simple engineering keeps the price down
head turning coupe with a top speed of 170mph
impossible to go faster for less
loads of equipment - climate cruise electric seats - but interior rubbish*
interesting TC system - on or off
big friendly occa from the outback
Drag race on the sand between the
Big and simple crocodile Dundee, - Monaro (3rd)
part German part American Arnold Schwartz, - Chrysler (2nd)
raffles the gentlemanly thief - Jaguar (Jag won)
Vauxhall shouldn’t have lost the drag test, may be the problem is the mountain of torque - digs holes in the sand well
Handling
Jag - absolute joy, gentlemanly, potent
Monaro - balletic, really works, strangely lovable (beat the jag on handling)
Chrysler - oh dear, serious problems, huge letdown
Summary
Jag really fast and feels special inside
JC - fallen totally in Love with the Vauxhall - got in it, and within 300 yard knew somebody had built a car for me
engine gives a deep down burble that goes up the back of your spine
really like the looks of it too
Verdict - the Monaro won
Astonishing Vauxhall
just fabulous, it really is
Astonishing that an Australian car with a huge American Engine could work so well
Has a brutality too it, yet it responds with just the smallest touch
comfortable/spacious/well equipped
does what a muscle car should do - puts a huge smile on your face
Studio afterwards
reminiscent of a £100k 1990's Aston Martin Vantage
sense of infinite power, sense of hugeness
it’s a fabulous car
quite magical
one of the top 5 cars for £30k
if you don’t buy one, your mad or boring
we all loved it
* the ONLY negative comment (I don't agree - OK the interior is not up to jag standards, but its certainly not rubbish - and the Jag is £50k)
Mr Hamond said how much power the Jag produced (400hp) but the type R is supercharged,... just see how much power a supercharged Monaro can produce......
G'Day Paul,
Yes mate, spend just a few thousand pounds's, not the extra £20 needed for the Jag on it and not many cars would catch it hay.
As they said you will not find a car that has so much & go so quick for less.
Beauty Mate.

I thought that JC would opt for the Monaro. I have a copy of a very complimentary write-up he did on the HSVR for the Sunday Times back in Feb 2002 entitled 'At last, an Australian with trousers to match its mouth' With the HSVR priced at £49,995 at the time he still liked it and summed up by saying that 'This is a worthwhile alternative for anyone who finds the BMW M5 a bit too civilised and slow. Think of it as being a modern version of Mad Max's V8 and you're about there. It's a car for serious car buffs, people who just want a laugh and too hell with what the damn thing looks like.'
Not sure about the last comment but I believe that JC is definitely a Holden man and lets be honest, he is Top Gear with the rest playing supporting roles!
