I have just fitted a K&N filter on the VXR. Noted that it has the larger hole and pipe. Also there is a flap held on by one nut, undoing said nut allows panel to be removed and opens an airway to pipe directly under vents on the pastic surround at the front of the engine bay on the right as looked at.

Just never noticed it before, wondered whether i had overlooked it. Have taken it off, and fitted K&N, no noticable induction noise difference or change in performance.

Any help would be appreciated.

The idea of the cover/flap on the VXR (or HSV..) is to blank off hot air entering from the engine bay via the vents on top. By removing the cover, you may be allowing more hot air to enter the engine from the engine bay. Monaro CV8's (like mine) don't have a cover (I need to make one) and they only have 1 smallish air intake hole between the air filter box and the air collection 'funnel' behind the headlamp. I've added the second hole in the airbox - as you saw yesterday, which has made a difference to the air intake noise on my car. So just replacing your air filter with a K&N item probably won't make much difference to the air intake sound, as you already have the larger HSV air intake system. Hope this helps

Spot on GSE - you need cold air from OUTSIDE.

My car with the radiator top shield removed:

The hole on the left is the original air inlet, the extra hole & pipe, on the right, connecting the air box and funnel, is the air box mod for non HSV cars. I now need a top cover to close off the air funnel to hot air from the engine bay (or a ram air system?) and to complete, the large bore maf to throttle body pipe.

Just wondered why they put a flap there at all. Must be an easy way of taking in cooler air than to buy the Linden plastic intake.

Holes in bottom of air box ??
