Nice car, just imported one this month -having major "red tape" problems with VOSA on regarding safety standards for the EU.

Any hints on the process?

Great to see that there are HSV's on the UK roads, look forward to seeing your car around.

Hello, I didn't actually import this one myself, but I have all the documentation for it from import onwards.

I will dig through it and see if I can find any contacts that may be able to help.

If you are going to Billing Aquadrome this weekend give me a shout if you see me and we can run through the info.

What version are you getting?
The VX or VY, Clubsport R8 or GTS?

Cheers

HSV Clubsport. Will look at bringing it over with trade plates on. I might need to track down some entry passes though?

Ahhhh!, there you go then!

If you bring it to Billing, contact EH*Rob on the VBOA topic as he is looking for people to join in the HSV stand.

Cheers,

Eric

Hey Kiwihsv what has the shipping cost you so far? Did you have much hassle getting it over? Is it brand new or second hand?
Im an expat and have often considered shipping something over. It would be good to know some of the details. I also think if you have owned it 6+ months in NZ you are expempt from UK VAT is that correct?

Not sure I am the best person to talk to, impluse decision to bring it over whilst on a quick visit and perhaps needed to look into it a bit more. Worth it though! It is a HSV Clubsport (year 2003). Ended up paying vat and duty with freight andthe usual clearance charges. Will resurect the paperwork and find out actual cost.

Cheers, Des

Hi Guys,

I imported mine from NZ without any tax or duty costs. That was because I owned it for 6 months in NZ before bringing it over, and had to hold onto it for over 12 months in UK.

There is a book available from the DVLA called "how to import a vehicle into the UK". That has all the contact details. You need to get it through the SVA first. I was picked up on the following:

Flat driver’s side mirror didn't cover the required area. Couldn't found a GM one that fitted but found a Honda one that fitted.

Tow bar didn’t have the required radii so I removed it. Back on now though.

There is a place in Auckland that will put in a frequency converter for the Speedo, and they also turn off the "k" in the display so it only shows the "m" for the odometer. Has it left NZ yet?

Other minor things that needed to be removed for the SVA such as phone kit and sound equipment as the cables weren't clipped as often as the required distance stated. All gets put back in after the pass from DVLA.

Let me know if you want more info.

Hi all
Was just wondering how Kiwihsv went on importing HSV in the end, was it worth the drama? I am looking to be back in the UK in about April after much delay and am looking at bringing my 04 Phantom Black R8 with me. As I will be based in Northern Ireland I was thinking of getting as much of the mods done (that are needed for SVA1)in NZ, I know we need rear foglight and speedo conversion but do we need fuel restrictor. I also note something re the drivers side mirror not being large enough, is this just the glass reflector?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks Jay

Hi Jeremy,
About to go through the import process in about 2 weeks time. My car (VX Series II V6 (couldn't afford at the time the 2 extra cylinders) should be here on the 3rd Feb. Will write up what changes I made to get it up to pass the test.

Was funny though, was talking to a mate of mine, who brought over a motor bike. All he did on his was put a black sticker over the K, for KPH, and wrote an M in liquid paper. It passed the test! Umm, wonder if I can get away with that as well.

As far as I can figure out, that is all I need to get it done for it to pass the SVA.

Err...

My GTS has an MPH sticker over the KPH, no expense spared on official importing in 2000.

Nice car mate, (just had a look at your specs) still fairly stock looking but got the goodies. The way all cars should be !!
Quick question, does your cars odo actually read in miles or is only the speedo converted?

I have another couple of silly questions (sorry for being a pain)
I notice the rear foglight on the VXR seems to be surface mounted and was thinking this could be ideal for my car (as per Kiwihsv)Does anyone know the part number for the light and also what switch actions it. I have looked at some of the cockpit photos and cannot see any extra switches so wondered if it is connected to the main headlight switch and activated by pulling out as per the front driving lights?
Thanks Jay

Hi Jay

No it reads in MPH

Thanks for comments, only visual mods are yellow wheel nut covers and green titanium window tints - and it won 'hottest other' catagory at Hot Import Night where every car was visually modified LOL

with regards to the speedo thing...

I dont know much about the SVA itslef, but here in Northern Ireland, the MOT will fail a car if the speedo does not ahve both mph and kmh indicated. I think there is only one SVA centre in Northern Ireland.

A small point though.

Hi Stevie
I have just checked the speedometer requirements for Northern Ireland (Statutary Requirements for Mot 2003/2004 Northern Ireland, SVA etc) and they say only that the speedometer must read in mph, be accurate and also be visible at night. So it would appear that any one refusing an MOT on grounds of not having kilometers as well as mph is in fact incorrect and breaking the law.
This information was taken from about three different websites related to the department of transport, driving licences etc, all saying exactly the same thing and is from the quide supplied to all MOT stations.
Cheers Jay
