Considering buying a Monaro and am moving up from something very mundane, and front wheel drive. Is the traction control going to keep me out of trouble if I am too enthusiastic on the gas?

Does the Monaro have any nasty surprises for the inexperienced?

I have had a short drive in a CV8 and it seemed very well mannered but I am out again on Tuesday on a longer test drive without the salesman and I don't want to bend it !!

(I am not going to put it into a wet roundabout and floor it in first - I don't mean that foolproof, although my current car can cope with that)

I hope I am not that ingenious Quinny, but the road was once littered with 911 owners who probably thought they were driving relatively carefully and got caught out.

If you want to be quick without the backend lighting up...It does the job, especially if the wife going to drive it. but best way to drive is with it off but spend some money at a skid pan or something simalar first..and then enjoy.

In the dry you will have no problems with TC on, however on a slippery surface on or off beware. I was coming back from Goodwood in the wet this year, and accelerated in a straight line down a slip road, came onto cam in third and the back end lit up TC on. Very good fun though, the car will be as benign as u want it to be, just respect the amount of torque you have at your disposal.

Anything with 300+ BHP down the back end has the POTENTIAL to step out - its down to the driver.

That said My previous Z28 stepped out all the time - live axle. The suspension on the HSV is far superior and the back end is less susceptable.

The TC relies on the throttle pedal collapsing away. I had that type of TC on the Z28 and it was OK, but felt wierd until you got used to it. Owners of Monaros - what do you think when the throttle pedal drops away?

Very disconcerting til u get used to it.

Are these fly by wire throttles ? If not how does it action the pedal. I have to say, i hate the feeling. No control.

Hmm, thought you might have said that. No not fly by wire. The control unit must release the tension some how???

Drops away? Mine seems to do the opposite - i.e the accelerator pedal pushes up when the TC activates. It is a strange feeling, at first I thought that there was a problem with the pedal getting stuck.

I can make the VXR beat the TC on take off, 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to 3rd without much trouble. When it does kick in it pushes back on the pedal a bit.

If the TC is off ... well I think I'll be going for some skid pan control lessons before going there ...

Hopefully I'll be getting it back by the end of this week
