Been offered a red, 1 owner, full history, year 2000 GTS with a highish 80K miles. I am not familiar with Holdens (apart from reading road tests etc). Some questions please:

1. What do you reckon the cars value is?
2. How hard to re-sell it if I dont like it?
3. Any inherrent faults to look out for before purchase?

cheers Fin

Hi Fin,

I will give you my thoughts on your questions..........

1. I have not seen any good condition UK Spec GTS's for sale below £20,000 and the advertised prices are normally around £24,000+ for average mileage cars.

2. The GTS is a rare car (only 41 UK Spec cars) and has a limited market so selling them is a slow process, as a guess 2-3 months+, but now the Monaro is sold in this country the GTS's are becoming popular as they have 4 doors!!

3. Condition is everything on a GTS so look for the service's to have been completed on time and all the bi annual fluid changes to have been done!!

Replacement HSV parts are expensive so check all HSV specific parts like brakes and suspension to be in very good condition.

The engine is general very good but some have had problems with piston slap and high oil usage, but at 80,000 miles if it did suffer it must have been rebuilt by now.

The gearbox is a bit truck like and sometimes noisy but is very strong..........a clutch will cost around £700 fitted, so make sure it is ok.

4. Should you buy one YES..........................

ps. what build number is it and do you have some pictures...........

Thanks Paul,

Sounds like (asuming good condition and full history) the values are broadly similar to same age M5's?

Are there any dealers that specalise in them please?

Also what kind of prices are we talking about for the usual consumable type stuff, discs, pads, exhaust system etc

What about servicing/fixing them, where could I go up here in Scotland??!

cheers Fin

PS Will forward you chassis no etc. once I get it myself.

Fin there is only one company which has extensive knowledge of the UK Spec GTS & GTS-R, and they are Linden Special Vehicles but they are in Northampton!!! (link on the HSV club page)

As a general rule Vauxhall dealers know nothing about the GTS (even though they are supposed to know about the Monaro)

Most people in the club have found a competent local garage to do the work and use LSV or the owners club for sourcing parts.

The engine and gearbox is a well known items but are not to be regarded as the same as the American LS1 engine as they have differences..........

A rough guide to parts:-

Brake pads (EBC) front £70.
Exhaust (they are stainless as standard) about £600
Tires (Eagle F1) £129 each
K&N Filter £45
Oil filter £3.25

We have a few club members up north......."Dave52" has a Monaro in Edinburgh and "Jagsy" has a 2000 GTS in Newcastle...................
