3.0d diesel VM engine - reliability
Discussion
It’s a lovely engine ,quite a nice warble from it also like any other car you only hear the horror stories , keep on top of servicing what else can you do..never really got on with my Ghibli but could never put my finger on exactly what it was …or wasn’t .
On a run the economy was very impressive at low 40’s , I think a petrol would be a different car tbh as the rear in the diesel is a bit twitchy maybe to do with weight distribution.

Any opinions on the 3.0d used in the Ghibli. Are these good for 200+k miles like bmw/vag motors?
Look great value and a nice looking alternative to the Panamera / S class / A7 models.
Last few cars CLS / 635d / 640d / Panamera all 3.0d models
Picked mine up at around 85K and it is now approaching the 100K mark. The car still feels solid, well put together and has no reliability issues or rattles. Mine gives 27-30mpg around town. Not surprising really for a diesel from cold. On a long run, 42-45 is achievable although generous use of Sports mode means I get 38-40 on runs of 200 or so miles. It is a big, wide car and is definitely suited to long runs rather than poodling around town.Look great value and a nice looking alternative to the Panamera / S class / A7 models.

Problems ? My auxiliary belt snapped. According to the service schedule, it should have been replaced at an earlier service prior to my purchasing the vehicle. The belt, a new pulley and coolant tank cost me £600 but everything else has been routine maintenance. Parts such as brake disks are Maserati only and are expensive. Scuderia and Euro Spares are good for parts.
Servicing is v expensive at the dealer. As it's a Chrysler engine, I use an indy and a trusted local garage for maintenance, and order in a service pack with all the filters and oil for them. Apart from replacing the auxiliary belt every five years, the service is routine.
Look carefully at the spec. Base spec misses out on heated and memory seats for example. The infotainment shows its age but you can get an Android upgrade for £500 from a number of places (mine is a 2014 model and I think 2017+ models have CarPlay as standard and an upgraded infotainment system). The ergonomics are not as good as my old 5 Series but all the buttons work, everything functions and there are no rattles.
As with any low volume, left field choice, you get something different but accept a few compromises. I drove an A7 and while it was more of a tech fest, and had a great interior, I wanted the Maser and have no regrets.
Wrt to high mileage examples, AT shows some around 120K so you may need to check out Chrysler or Jeep forums to get a better picture of what mileage these are good for.
