Maserati Ghibli Owners

Hi All

New poster here - please go gentle 😀

I wondered if there are any ghibli owners who could give the benefit of their experience?

I’m looking to buy a 2017 facelift diesel ghibli - I realise there are better cars out there but the ghibli just pulls at my heart strings too much!

I’m trying to get a full view of costs before pulling the trigger - I know some might say if you have to ask it’s not for you - but I like to plan in advance.

Specifically I’d like to understand

- servicing costs - both authorised and “back street”
- cost of pads and discs?
- any ongoing niggles to look out for?

Looked at a Ghibli briefly sometime ago and other than the Maserati badge the equivalent 5 series or E class is much better in terms of drive ability etc.

I also decided against a Ghibli as the running costs seem expensive compared to a German car, at least with a German car there are German independents for servicing in most towns and cities, from my research there aren’t any Maserati independents?

When did you do that research? Quite a few Maserati independents from a quick Google search just now

Had a V6S in metallic blue for a few days when my 458 went in for a service..

The perceived quality of the trim wasn't quite up to BMW/Audi/Merc standards, but that aside, I thought it was a bloody lovely car to tool around in.

Great soundtrack, decent steering, great soundtrack, comfy on a long journey, pretty quick, great soundtrack....

Overall I could quite easily have bought one, but my mileage requirements changed so ended up buying something else.

If you fancy one, go for it!

Another vote for Darren, apart from the slightly steep entrance and tight forecourt he knows his stuff.

Before buying mine I did some research on general consumables and also things that may be likely to need replacing (water pump/alternator etc). I compared it to my old 6 series and it wasn’t a great deal more.

The only good thing about these cars being made by fiat/Chrysler is that they share some parts so once you have a long list of who makes the Maserati stamped parts you can get them for 30-50% of the Maserati box price. One part that I can’t source is replacement discs, despite them being stamped made in Germany I can’t find who the oem supplier is. Some US people have bought cheap discs but I don’t want cheap, just not the blue box markup.

An example:
Pads - dealer £300, Direct from brembo -£60.
Oil filter - £70 or UFI direct, £40.
Air filter is expensive and the only real replacement is one that you just re-oil rather than replace, for £80. HR Owen often have deals on eBay and I got a boxed filter for £55.
Oil is shell helix, 2 x 5 litres usually about £50.

I did front discs and pads for about £500. This is £1200 at the dealer.

If HR Owen don’t have it on eBay or you need a really specific part then scuderiacarparts or eurospares let you order per part number from a diagram. They are cheaper than main dealer but everything is legit Maserati kit in a blue box.

Darren lets you supply parts so the parts cost for an oil/filter change is about £150 and about another £150 for him to do the service. You could do it yourself but for this cost I like his expert eye being cast over the car. That is about the same as my bmw was to service.

A main dealer service for the same oil/filter change is £1-1,200. I don’t mind paying for expertise but undoing a sump plug and waiting for the black stuff to finish pouring before putting some good stuff in the top isn’t difficult. The air filter is fiddly but again quite straightforward. No way would I pay £1,200 for that!

I know Maserati trade on their exclusivity (although this is at odds with the current board who want to sell mainstream volume) but their ridiculous servicing and parts costs will stop them achieving this. Why should a £40 UFI filter cost £80 just because it comes in a Maserati box. Why should brembo pads cost £400 when they actually cost £60....
