Purchase advice please
Discussion
Good morning all, I'm new to this forum and hope that I can glean some advice on the purchase of a 4.2 Maserati GT.
It's a 2010 model with medium mileage (40k) and on offer through a non-franchise showroom for just under £39,000.
Having never owned one of these beauties, do you have any advice on what to look out for and what to ask the
seller? I'm not talking about the obvious like interior finish, bodywork condition or state of the tyres, just what to beware of.
The seller states that it has full Maserati dealer service history so if that's true, I would feel happier, especially
if there is a paperwork covenance to back it up.
Many thanks in advance for your help. I will keep you posted on the situation.

Hi, I was looking for a similar age 4.7 earlier in the year - the best resource I found for information was the sportsmaserati.co.uk forum - a very friendly and knowledgable bunch. In terms of the potential issues I uncovered, the main one was an issue with the variators on earlier engines. 2010 would be in the zone where you need to be careful - If the car rattles on start-up, you are looking at a very substantial bill to fix. Even if it doesn't rattle, I'd be looking for evidence that either the issue has already been rectified, or the engine number shows its a later engine which isn't prone to the problem. It's a 2010 model with medium mileage (40k) and on offer through a non-franchise showroom for just under £39,000.

On a slightly seperate note , there is a GT buyer's guide in this month's Auto Italia.
Other than that - good luck with your purchase - they are great cars, maybe not the absolute pinnacle of performance or technology, but I can't imagine a finer "feel-good" car for everyday use.
I was in a similar position this time last year, looking for a GT. Initially a 4.2 but wasn't wowed. Joined the sportsmaserati forum and took the advise of many to up budget slightly & try a 4.7. much better car. Puts a smile on my face each time I drive it.
Try one, you won't want a 4.2 after that...

nothing else to add apart from what's been said. I emailed you about it anyway ;-)
with regards to variators there's range of engine numbers which can be impacted, anything outside of that is okay.
Mine is 2009 July I believe and engine number is outside of the range.
they're quite spec sensitive, when I was looking for mine I needed to find one with front sensors as bonnet is huge, bigger paddles (look and feel much better than standard smaller ones), memory seats (slide forward when getting in the back) and Bose (nice to have).
4.7S is really the one to get and if you don't want to worry about clutch, drive around town a lot then Automatic (ZF Auto 6 speed) is the one to get rather than MC-SHIFT.

Thanks for all your advice guys.
One last question: Do I need to worry about variators on the 4.7 engine?
Maybe a stupid question but please help a Masser novice!!
If the engine number is lower than 148697 there might be an issue. Its not every engine but revised part was being fitted from that number onwards. One last question: Do I need to worry about variators on the 4.7 engine?

Whatever you go for, get a decent independent inspection from an informed specialist. Go in with your eyes open....One last question: Do I need to worry about variators on the 4.7 engine?

If you are switching your attention to a 4.7 (which, I agree, is a very good idea), think very carefully about whether you want an Auto or an MC Shift and try to get a drive in both.
Drivers of each option tend to support their choice with great enthusiasm, so it's not really a choice to make based on someone else's opinion. I loved the idea of a Strad, but knew that the Auto was by far the better solution for my particular needs (a little too much stop-start driving for comfort and a lot too much of parking in tight spaces).
Personally, I love the Auto for it's ease of use and smoothness when making relaxed progress, while Manual mode in "Sport" is quite visceral enough for me when I'm pressing on.
having said all that....there is an interesting line on the variator issue towards the bottom of this post:

So, we've got to Rev our V8s to keep them healthy? What a chore.

A member on the Maseratisport forum is selling their very well sorted 4.7 for about £37k and that's where I suggest you go.
The variatiors are not the big deal made out, as a specialist such as Migliore will do the job for about £2k plus Vat. Of course, that's a lot, but it's not so crazy on a 5 year old car with 50000 miles that was £80k odd when new. It's the same price as a clutch, or an annual service plus tyres, or brakes all round, or....
A cambelt change on a late Mondial costs more than that, and needs doing very 3 years! (Just giving some perspective).
But anyway, the best advice is to go for a 4.7 and get to the other forum.
