Hi All, long time lurker, first time poster.

Like most Mk6 Golfs with a timing chain, I had mine replaced at 60k miles, owing to it stretching, along with oil pump chain and tensioner.

25k miles later and it appears to have gone wrong again.

On start up only (hot or cold), the engine sounds like a diesel, but will very quickly silence with either a quick rev or a speed bump. I am presuming the chain tensioner at fault. A couple of friends who are mechanics (but not Golf experts) say it sounds like chain slap.

The garage who replaced the timing chain and stuff 25k miles ago, have basically said 'bad luck, it's gonna cost £780.' Needless to say my long established relationship with them could be ending.

Is it possible to replace the tensioner without having to go through all the effort of replacing the chains or is it a case of the complete works are just as simple?

Or is it something else causing the noise?

It is the 1.2TSI 2011 petrol. All parts were genuine according to the invoice.

2019 I had the change, but a mere 25k miles, with frequent oil changes.

Billed OEM parts maybe but probably a crap BGA kit with inferior chain quality seen this before , the tensioner is doing its job but dealing with excess chain slack it'll have to come apart again im afraid
They are a reputable garage and I would doubt them using cheap parts.................. "doubt"
