Jeep Cherokee 2.5 TD Engine number???????

Help, I have recently bought a 1996 N reg jeep 2.5 T Diesel but have been unable to locate an engine number. Even on the V5 doc it says unknown in the engine number space. I did hear that Chrysler/Jeep didn’t use engine number before a certain date. Can someone please help as I have to register the car in Guernsey and they are saying that there should be an engine number and other than making one up, I am running out of ideas.

AFAIK they do have engine numbers, last year I was considering one and looked at several of that vintage, they all had numbers. I cannot remember exactly where it is located but maybe the web page below may help (it is Italian).

These are the Italian VM engines if that helps
