Land Rover freelander xedi with Volkswagen 1.9 tdi engine. Nice conversion to VW tdi power.
Freelander with a difference!!

The rover engine, gearbox, ird box, propshaft, rear diff, halfshafts etc, have all been removed and dumped in the bin where they belong! Rear wheels are now freewheeling as per a normal car only two wheel drive (most freelanders are only two wheel drive anyway because they break so often !).

NOW fitted is a volkswagen 1.9 tdi (red eye) engine and box from a VW sharan 1999/02.

The issue have is the following, the lead from the engine to the speedo is all there [VW] I need just a head speedo unit that will fit. I don’t want to replace all the head unit just the speedo. Does anyone know if there are any good garages in the south west of england [ish] that would be able to attempt to do this for me. I'm outta time now and need someone to finish this small tweek so I can see how fast I am going and the milage would be nice!

What was wrong with the XEDi unit out of interest? I thought the diesel Freelanders were the ones to go for.

And the point of a 4x4 that is not 4x4? each to their own, but why?

Mainly the MPG, I now have a smart looking car with none of the Freelander issues, as it's a MK1 98 plate, having had a few - this car now has all the fun - less the issues. It was never a great 4x4 - my Delica was better and that was 'an experience' off road! It's also about a quarter of a tonne lighter, handles better, cruses better and oh the MPG sites up in 40's now.

I just wanted the best of both worlds!

I'm not a Landy hater, just a guy with a unique speedo issue that I hope someone out there knows a person how can help.

This sort of stuff needs a smart person , those are thin on the ground ! Put up some pictures and I'm sure someone will find a way around it or find your nearest eastern European and he will have an idea

best solution would be to sell the whole lot and buy a post 2001 freelander TD4, which has a vastly superior BMW diesel engine to the VW TDI you fitted. also did you keep the cv joints in the rear hubs?

OP is from 2011. His/her only 2 posts so you might not get a reply.
And no update as to whether or not the issue they were talking about was ever resolved.
