Your favourite engines

I'm thinking in the sound, oomph, technology and looks department.

For me-

Sound: Chevrolet small-block V8. Heard one on a racing '71 Camaro Z28 once and it brought tears to my eyes.

Oomph: I've heard Lotus are working on a 450bhp Lotus V8 to take the new Esprit to 200mph. Being a Lotus unit, it'll be lighter than air.

Technology: Lancia Delta S4: 0-60 in 2.3 seconds from a 1.6 litre! Mainly because it had a supercharger and a turbocharger - supercharger operated up to the revs necessary for the turbo to clear the turbo lag producing constant forced induction. No need to make the engine bigger - a perfect balance of motorsport thinking at its best.

Looks: The Alfa Romeo V6. Just look at the individually chromed pipes and hoses and the neatly plated 'Alfa Romeo V6' lettering and tell me it's not pretty.

Always loved the BMW straight 6, preferably on an E30 with stainless zorst..

But a serious passion for the RV8...

B202, went into mass production in 1985/6. So nearly 20 years ago you could buy a family saloon with a 2litre, 16V, DOHC, Turbocharged 4Cyl. Technicaly it was way ahead of the curve add to that its massively tuneable and strong as nails its an amazingly overlooked lump.

The BRM V16 is without doubt the most incredible sounding engine ever.

Having seen them at Goodwood and had one fire up right next to me it produced a mind-boggling noise.

Closely followed by a high compression small block chevy with straight through exhaust.
Like my car actually.....

Jag XK, BMC A-series, Rover V8. All successful enough to stay in production for ages and ages being fitted to all sorts of different sorts of cars, all good for big increases in oomph without too much difficulty, and tough with it.

BMW flat twin, as the nearest equivalent in the motorbike world.

Napier Deltic. Say no more.

For sound it might well be the English Electric 16CSVT as I have a fair bit of audio tape footage of this...

Rover V8, sounds wonderful in a Wedge or Griff.

Ferrari 250, preferably GTO, 3 litre V12 is exquisite

Ford GT40

Ford 2.8 V6 sounds nice with a decent exhaust system
