Exhaust parts suppliers

Having got fed-up of paying through the nose for exhaust systems that rot out after 3 years can anyone tell me of a supplier where I can simply buy exhaust sections for a normal car (98 mondeo 2.5v6 estate in this case) so I can fit them myself?

I've tried the main dealer and they want £170 for the two back boxes which is all I require which seems a lot.

I know what your saying but its only a mondeo and sod's law dictate I'll want to change it as soon as I fit a stainless system

I really want to avoid performance systems because I don't want it to get any noisier as it's our family car and I'd rather spend the money on my other cars.

Odd though it sounds, you might want to go for main dealer option, as aftermarket ones are cheaper typically because they are made out of much worse materials, hence why they fall apart after a year or two.

I always thought that but the stuff put on the car as new lasted 3 years and the kwit-fit stuff lasted the same. Normally I'd agree but I think ford cut costs on some parts.

I have a porsche 944 still on its original exhaust after 95k and *20* years (according to the previous owner who had it for 12 years).

A '98 Mondeo will have been fitted with a stainless steel system as standard. The service part from the main dealer will be made by the same company (Arvin I believe) usually using the same material spec. That's why it's expensive.

In my experience ATS fitted parts are usually worse fitting, sounding and less robust - but cheaper. You pays your money and you takes your choice.....

PS. The original system was designed to last about 5 years - 10 for emission critical parts (cat etc)

I will check but we bought it in 2000 with 45k miles on it and it rotted out early 2001 and it didn't look like stainless steel to me. I guess the original could have been wrecked and replaced with a kwik-fit job but it seems unlikely. I'll phone ford though and check.

Look in your local yellow pages / thompsons for motor factors. You'll have to phone around as some of them supply trade only whilst others hide in there because they can't find another section that suits them.
Or maybe i'm wrong.

In most cases the OEM parts are made by the likes of Arvin as you say and are usually designed by the vehicle manufacturer. The replacement part purchased from the main dealer will very rarely be made by the same manufacturer and is manufactured to a cost dictated by the vehicle manufacturer. The quality of the two parts is not comparable in most cases. In addition the part purchased from the likes of Kwik Fit or ATS is often manufactured by the company with the OE contract who supplies the main dealer. An exhaust part purchased from main dealer will almost never last as long as the original system on the car.

Right, just to report back... I bought these and it came to 80 quid delivered with all the hangers and clamps and looks fine. Was pretty easy to fit.

The good thing about this system should anyone want a system for a v6 mondeo estate (you never know) is that there's a curved section that goes over the rear subframe which is impossible (as far as I could see) to fit on normal ramps. This section was split in two which made fitting on home ramps a doddle. Very pleased indeed.

You're right about the estate. In production the muffler is fitted before the rear subframe on estates and then cut for service.

As far as service parts being a different spec, they should be the same. I have released parts myself on Mondeos and the service parts including material spec etc are actually shown on the main production drawing with just the split point shown as a detail.

Certainly after market parts are another thing altogether.
