Tweaking advice needed!
Discussion
I need some advice into tweaking my car. I'm looking to do some simple, inexpensive tweaks that should just add an edge to the performance, such as it is.
However, i'm not sure exactly what I can do to my car to achieve this. So I'm turning the matter over to the vast knowledge of the PH massive for advice!
I have a 1996 Rover 220 SD (yeah I know ). Two litre turbo diesel engine.
Any suggestions?
Please???????

K&N type induction filter - £70 odd, add perhaps 5 bhp and good noise.
S/S exhaust - £300 odd, add perhaps another 5 bhp and good noise. Err, maybe not so good as it's a diesel!
Suspension upgrades - £300 odd, won't add power but you'll be able to go round corners quicker. And may look slightly better depending in your taste.
Turbo boost increase - £300 odd, add up to, dunno how much power - depends on the engine etc.

Not the cheapest or the easiest, swap the engine for the SDi lump, much better engine!
I know this. I said cheap tweaks!
Edited to add: Also, does anyone know anywhere in the somerset/bristol area that could possible fit an intercooler? Cos the car don't have one at the moment, and I know one would certainly help!

My wife has one of these HOW SLOW!, yeap swap it for an Sdi that's what were doing the whole car, far easier.
I stuck it on my AP22 Data logger struggled to make 68bhp at the wheels. It is horrendously slow.
Modifying the boost does nothing (I tried it) as it's not intercooled & not easy to intercool either.
No hope I'm afraid, sell it to some old duffer & buy another one just an Sdi this time round.

Thats the trouble. I may be able to try and tweak it, but I can't afford to sell it. And I doubt I can afford to swap an SDi lump into it either. Any ideas on how much that would cost?
It seems fair enough through the gears to me (it's a dog off the line though) just needs a bit more to have comfortable overtaking grunt too.
Sell yours for whatever you can get for it, not much I assume. Sdi's go for about £100 more so you may be lucky & it won't cost anything to change.
Got to agree, performance off the line is the worst thing about the car, not matter what you do bar slipping the clutch it just will not get off the line in a hurry, especuially worrying at dodgy junctions.
Especially when used to driving somewhat swifter machinery on a daily basis.

Find the fueling screw on the diesel pump (if mechanical derv) turn up screw until you get visible black smoke during daylight when booting it, back off screw until it stops. Job done.
Matt
...anyone see that "Scrappy Races" on channel 4? The farmers with the massive Rolls Royce diesel tried this... the screw fell out and the engine blew up! So be careful!
Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I thought I might give an update on my attempt to get a little more out of my car.....
The car had been slow right from when I bought it. Too slow. Then it began loosing power when pushed, and the check engine light kept coming on when it did. Since I was having money problems I couldn't get it checked. But finally, finances sorted, I got it into my excellent local garage.
Turned out that the primer pump on the fuel filter was collapsing, causing fuel starvation. The mechanic reckoned it had been on it's way out for a while. So he replaced the primer and filter. Car was much better straight away. Much stronger, felt like a worn, old engine had been replaced with a fresh one. Problem solved!
Or so I thought....
The other weekend I decided it was about time I gave the car a service. So I bought the oil, filters etc, and got to it. Everything was going well, until I removed the air filter. It was practically BLACK. I knew the car didn't have much service history but, Jesus....this hadn't been done since the car came out of warranty nearly 4 years ago!
So I am now berating myself for not spending what little money I had when I bought the car on servicing it. It's made an amazing difference. True it's still not fast, but at least it's not embarrasingly slow anymore!

Found out the wifeys had a stuck wastgate too, recently fixed it with a an airline now it goes a bit better & you can hear the wastegate actuating on full acceleration (I use this term loosly)
Now the torbo is spooling much quicker so much so it's improved the off the line bit heaps. Before I assume the air was being sucked past a stationary blower at least now it's been assisted on its route to the chamber

Cool! Glad to hear it's running better.
I find that now I've sorted it, it starts to boost at 2000 RPM but doesn't get on full song until 2500. Get it up to 2500 in second, hold it there for, say, 3 or 4 seconds then plant the throttle. It really don't pull too bad if you do that!
Still wish I had got the SDi though. Cos they can be tweaked easily for even more grunt.
Still, if you come up with any tweaks for your wife's one, be sure to let me know!
