I have recently bought a Rover 220 SD (yeah yeah I know ). It seemed to go well enough on the test drive, no unusual noises etc, turbo was working. But since i've had a chance to drive it more a small problem has appeared. I don't think it's serious, but it's bloody annoying, and I need suggestion as to what it is and how to fix it.

Basically, it seems to have a lot more turbo lag than it should do. My old mondeo turbo diesel probably had a turbo at least as big as this one, and that would cut in in a second or less. It takes the turbo anything upto four seconds to properly engage if I have been driving off boost. The car had been stood a while - several months I think - so I thought this might have something to do with it.

Any suggestions to fix this would be appreciated!

We've got one of these, sounds like the wastegate is stuck open.

Detach the air pressure hose (small one goes to actuator) attacth an airline & pump air in repeatedly. You should hear the wastegate flap, hopefully more enthusisticaly than before.

Nope, it ain't the wastegate. It's getting onto boost properly, it just took a long time to get there. Got the chance to have a word with a diesel addict friend of mine yeasterday afternoon. After that I gave the car a caning down the motorway. Seems that it's just needed some cobwebs blasting out after being stood for several months. It's much more responsive now

All I have to do now is save some cash, and then give her a tweak or two. And intercooler ought to help a bit for starters.......

Make sure your exhaust system is clear sometimes the baffles brake up and block the exhaust.
Get somebody to floor it and put your hand over the exhaust.

Ahhhh ain't injector cleaner wonderful stuff?

Stuffed some in the tank. Drove the nuts of it.
Lag problem sorted, and fuel economy is up to boot!

Me happy now

On a side note, apparently the only difference between the 220 SD and the more powerful 220 SDi is an intercooler. Is this true? And if it is, could and intercooler be retrofitted to the SD to bring it upto SDi standard?

Which product did you use? I think mine may need some, as it has become a little more sluggish.

TIA

Bad news I'm afraid, as far as I am aware the 'i' engines also have direct fuel injection (injecting into the cylinder, not into a pre combustion chamber above the cylinder, as the non 'i' engines do), and their injection is electronic against the non 'i' engines mechanical injection, I would also guess (and it is only a guess) as the 'i' engines use an intercooler they are running a higher boost.
Hope this is of some help,
Chris.

It's called 'Redex Diesel Treatment'. You can get it from Halfords. On the bottle it'll tell you that some with every fill-up will keep the engine clear blah blah. Don't bother with that. Put twice what the bottle says into a full tank of diesel, and drive the car hard. Once that tank full has run through, your oil burner should be nice and clear. And, with any luck, performance and fuel economy will pick up a bit.

Thanks flooritforever,

I thought it might be Redex, but wondered if you had found another product.

Think I may put some in mine at the w/e

Cheers

Difference between the D and Di diesel.
Di has an electronic controlled diesel pump (throttle is not cable operated = accelerate by wire) and intercooler. D has a mechanical pump and no intercooler. Basic engine is the same.
So to upgrade it would be an expensive job, or find a scrapped Rover Di diesel with all these parts on (probably still not cheap).

So...I'd need a completely new fuel pump, throttle and control system, new ecu and on top of that the intercooler. Or a new engine which may need all sorts of other part to go with it....

Hmmm, think I'll save my cash and just get a faster car when I can. Pity though.....

Borrowed a Tdi Bora few days ago . . . Best diesel powered thingy I drove yet. No turbo delay whatsoever . . . 130 bhp to go.
