Recent posts have attacked both the Ford Duratec V6 and the Rover K Series engines for reliability. Who makes engines that last? Who makes engines that don't? Any thoughts guys?

As most of us have to fork out for garage bills sooner or later this has to be handy to know.

I think bmw and merc engines are pretty hardy. Also my 911 3.2 had 90,000 miles on it and still felt really tight and was very fast.

Although I have has various other problems with my car, the engine have never ever missed a beat...

...except that time a I changed the cambelt and got it one tooth out.
Even then it just ran lumpy and showed the engine check light.

Still goes like stink, is reasonabley economic and I have no quarms about the Cambridge-Worcester-Cambridge-Sheffied-Cambridge odessey I shall be emabarking on tonight...

...just thought I'd chase Santa around the UK leg of his world tour you see...

...and all this when she's about to turn over the big 160.

Speaking of the Duratec V6, does ANYONE know somewhere in the South East where I can get the headgasket replaced for less than a million quid?

I've got this perfectly good Mundano Estate Ghia with leather, cruise, heated seats etc. Great workhorse and towcar for the Locost. However, its book value is only about 700 quid.

I don't think the Duratec V6 should be put in the same bracket as the K series. It certainly isn't on Watchdog every week!

I agree, mine has done 142,000 miles! So it can hardly be called unreliable. However, changing the headgasket is SO labour intensive on these engines that if it does go, it's not economically viable to fix. I've got a great car that is effectively scrap.

Sadly no...

I will be mostly visting the leaky old Grandbags for the next couple of days, then going up to see Emily's bro... might even get in a spot of winter climbing too.

I agree - Toyota. My MR2 Mk1 never missed a beat and it had 140K on th clock.

My Supra had a rebuild before I got it at 68k.

It is now on 126,500 miles and feels like it could go on for another 126k.

Amazing reliability.

the in line six cyclinder land cruiser engine,normally aspirated 4.2.They will do half a million miles,many have and many have done more.Saw one with 800,000kms on it and it had just had the original shells replaced as they had actually worn out.They did'nt even regrind the crank,just fitted original size shells and away she went.This had spent its life running the deserts of Australia too,not your typical motorway milage eh.

Ive had 3 Honda's

A W reg accord bought with 80k miles on the clock for £600 and sold it for £300 with 150k miles never spent a penny on it and thrashed it nuts off everywhere cos it was my first car.

Also had 2 Honda CRX's a 1500 with 105k when I sold it and a V-tec that was getting on for 90k.

Non of the 3 let me down once.

Why not get a haynes manual and give it a go it yourself?

I just thought I'd say where this thread originated. I have a Ford KA which at 100000 miles has had to have a new engine fitted. The camshaft had worn away on one lobe. Not an economic repair so a change of engine it was. I thought pushrod engines were reliable. When I mentioned this at work I was told a few stories about Ford engines having dud valve gear. A metalurgist said he once insisted on personally inspecting every cam follower his local Ford garage were going to use to repair his engine before he would let the garage fit them. He rejected half of them. I was considering a Focus for my next car. I hope it's better.

On the other hand I know a guy who has an old Saab 900 turbo that he has done a lot of engine mods to. It has done over 250000 miles and he's wound up the power to something well over stock. I heard that the old Saab block is very tough.

I also know of someone who had a nearly new Rover go pop. The cylinder head went. Has the K series really been on Watchdog?

Come on guys, these engines aren't high mileage! Saabs go on forever if looked after, 400'000 miles has been achieved for old 900's. My 9000 is on 266'000 and pulls really hard, burns no oil and has always been serviced.

There's a 1989 Saab 900 SPG (=T16S) in the States with 860,000 miles on the odo on its first engine. Owner plans to take it to one million and then donate it to the Saab Museum in Trollhättan.

250-300,000 Is quite common for these engines, and even boosting them far over stock power levels doesn't seem to affect them if well maintained.

Saab's are pretty good, I've heard of a Supra reaching 300k.

The highest recorded mileage for a car is 3,218,688 km (2 million miles) for a 1966 Volvo P-1800S owned by Irvin Gordon of East Patchogue, New York, USA. He reached the 2 million mile mark in the NBC Studios at Times Square, New York City, on March 27, 2002.
Irvin Gordon bought his red Volvo P1800S for US$4,150 from the Volvoville dealership on Long Island one Friday in 1966. The following Monday he was back for the 1,000 mile (1,600km) service, testament to his enjoyment of his car. The retired schoolteacher – who used to make a daily 201 km (124 mile) round trip to work - works on the car himself and has had it resprayed four times. While clocking up his record-breaking mileage Mr Gordon traveled through 48 US states, Canada, and five European countries.
