Problems with Ford TD engine, help anyone?

Hi I hope someone can give me a route of inquest that might save me some money.

I have a 97 escort td, and its just started running with reduced power (won't go up hills properly).

Its not overheating so I don't think its the head gasket and there's no nasty smoke coming out of the exhaust so I'm guessing its not the turbo. The clutch isn't squealling and doesn't feel as if it is slipping. The car sounds as if it is running properly, no unusual noises from the engine and its got me baffled!

Its had a major service recently, which rules out the fuel filter, someone suggested the exhaust, but its not that old.

there are no faults on the ecu, and its a little intermitent, sometimes it has no power (won't go above 30), then its not too bad, (down on power but just about drivable).

Any ideas?

Is the airfilter clean? Nothing blocking it etc?

its new, was done in the service

Could be the advance solenoid on the front of the injection pump, some short wires attached to it. When you turn on the ignition you should hear about 5 or 6 clicks from it as it adjusts. If you don't it's probably not functioning properly.

Had very similar symptoms to you and this was the cause.

yep i think we've found the problem, question is how easy is it to change? new pump, pump out or just unscrew, screw in new one and go, any calibration required?

Its worth checking the EGR valve.
Its very common for them to stick and cause loss of power.

The advance solonoid just bolts onto the pump, no need to remove the pump.
