I need to find out my engine number for insurance reasons. its a new V8developments block, and I have been told it is on the front of the engine...

Im buggered if I can find it. anyone able to point me in the right direction ?

Hmmm. Well you may have some difficulties, maybe not. Factory engines have the number on the block in between the middle exhaust pipes by the dip stick. This number will be the number allocated by DVLC. A new engine bought privately can have any number on it which won't be a dvlc number. So logically it may start 0001 for the first engine. Take a look at the front of the "V" just below the head and see if they put a number there. It could be RW or V8D or something none rover. It may be engraved or stamped. It might not have a number at all as it doesn't really need one. Can you ask them?

Wouldn't be on the front of the block but behind the timing cover, would it? My NCK 3.9 has an NCK number stamped somewhere around the front camshaft bearing.

Doubt it, that sounds like NCK being secretive/cautious in case they got a dodgy warranty claim or something. Fancy that, a hidden number! That's what car manufacturers do in the body work.

Ray used to put numbers at the front but he may have changed his methods over the years since I last spoke with him.

Ray may mark the fact that the block came from him on the front of the block, but he stamps his own engine number where the original would normally be.
I bought 1 complete engine from him ( which broke a crankshaft, although through no fault of his it turned out ), and 1 brand new block and some other parts.
The first complete engine was stamped as I describe, and the new block I bought had no engine number, but it did have his initials stamped on the front of the block near the cam gear.
Couldnt you give Ray a call and ask him??
I dont really see of what use an aftermarket engine number would be to the insurance though, as it would be totally meaningless and untraceable to them.
