Passat Engine, new one required!

My mates 99 T reg Passat's engine has expired according to his mechanic. There is oil everywhere and he's quoted £2k to fit a new engine.

How much would a Passat engine be to buy from a scrappy?

Its a 1.8 Petrol engine.

What happened to it? My dad's S-reg 1.8T expired in a cloud of metal on the M6 a while back. In that case it looked like it was due to a sheared off oil pump drive shaft

It took quite a while to find a second hand AEB shortblock and they eventually sourced one through one of those internet partfinder services. In the end it came to around a grand to get back on the road with a friendly garage doing the work. If you were in a hurry I could imagine it costing a bit more.
