Can any of you offer your wisdom about importing an engine from the US?

I've seen an engine on ebay in the US that I would like ( haven't we all ).
I am seeking guidance with respect to getting it "crated" or packaged as required, good shipping companies, some idea of the costs. Is there anything else I should know?

Can you put me in touch with anyone who import engines for a living, or someone with a container into which I could put an engine?

Thanks in advance.

You could ask the seller to crate it up on a pallet and then instruct a shipper here to make the pick up arrangements. It's pretty easy to do.

A mate of mine gets his drag engines from the states but gets the shipping done through his work so not sure of cost, but he does have to pay import tax (which apparently is something like 21% eek)

The vat is 17.5% on the cost of the goods and shipping as well as a customs clearing fee. You pay import tax of say 4% and a good guestimate of total government fees would be around about 21%. It soon adds up.

Try Air sea logistics www.airsealogistics.com/contact.html
Ask for Malcolm Francis, He's a drag racer & AFAIK owns the company. He brought in from California a V8 short block for me that I had brought on ebay . Just get the seller to strap it to a pallet & airsea will arrange collection from the seller on your instruction.
Be careful as ever buying off ebay , some engine shops in the USA are CRAP & some private sellers swap out good parts on an engine that you have brought for inferior parts before shipping ! , that said there are some bargain deals to be had & plenty of honest & helpful sellers.
