You may be overlooking something; The gearbox casing will not be Aluminium, it will be aluminium alloy. You will have all sorts of trouble welding a gearbox casing, so much that you will be better off just finding another one. The first problem is finding somebody that had the knowhow to weld it, the second is if they can ever do it, third is will it last more than 5 mins when its back on the car.

Fair comment, I know a of a guy in Wales who can do wonders with allsorts of cast alloys, he welds up broken rally car engines and boxes nearly every day, trouble is he wont deal with a courier, so I'd have to deliver it and collect it a week or so later. He knocks up some really crafty shortened inlet manifolds to for 205 16v conversions.

I've actually found an appropriate gearbox type now, its just finding one!!

thanks any way

Seems like you found the right person then. Did he warn about if it's load bearing it will probably fracture around where its been welded sooner or later?

Good luck with the gearbox hunt

The area I intended to have welded, would have been load bearing, its where the starter mounts!
If I can locate a sensibly priced Ultima Scorpio 4pot manual, i wont have the mod done, but its proving a bit tricky, seems most scrappys chuck them away as there is no demand for them, its all V6 boxes and autos!!

still, carrying on hunting

if you can find a late sierra 2.0, it should have the same box

Sierra box is the same as the granada one, the starter is on the passenger side and the clutch is cable operated, The box I'm after is from the 95 on scorpio ultima (frog eyed monstrosity), the starter is on the drivers side and the clutch is hydraulic. If only ford had stuck to the separate bellhousing as on earlier cars life would be a lot simpler!!!

Found a box for sensible money in Wolverhampton, should be here by the weekend thumbup
