I'm guessing you know how to set the motec up on the 964 then?

I only ask as I have a 964 myself, I'm trying to find out how hard it is to cull the flapper type MAF in favour of hot film or hot wire also.

If you want to get rid of the flapper AFM, you could go for A/N (Throttle position/engine speed) load measurement. This is what I did for my E30 M3.

MMM but I bet thats not a cheap way around it!

I'd like something that is available off another car (so I can buy used) and adapt to fit mine, I believe the 993 MAF will fit but fairly sure there is some wiring to be done which I dont mind!

wildman your best bet is to have a word with Dr Watson (Bob watson Engineering)he does a couple of trick ditties with regard to engine idle on start up and throttle position sensor, Er to be honest it all went a bit over my head but he is a Motec dealer and has been doing it for years if I cant get a second hand one for bob to fit i'll be purchasing a new one from him anyhows

Just use a cosworth map sensor, which will wire straight into the motec.

Motec ( and many other ecu's ) can use pretty much any map sensor you want.

If its n/a, wouldnt be much point using a Cossie one, as resolution would be greatly reduced.

Although on a n/a car, you dont even need a map sensor anyway. TPS is sufficient.

But wont make the car any faster than some cheaper ones....

And if its a standard or mildly tuned normally aspirated engine, basic is pretty much all you need.

What features does the Motec offer, that you feel your engine actually needs ? that other ecu's cant offer ?

And of them all, which ones do you think will make your car go faster or perform better than if it had a different ecu ?

The money you spend on Motec is normally quickly recouped on savings in setup time i.e. installation and use of factory sensors, and dyno time as there are many experienced Motec tuners out there.

Motec hurl Expensive, and there are other ECU's out there which are cheaper and just as good, if not better.

Valid point but take an Emerald ecu. It's fairly basic, user friendly, pretty cheap and Dave Walker maps it for peanuts, maybe £200 all in. I'm guessing an Emerald costs maybe £600. Motec ticks a lot of boxes for me but I do think it's expensive and more complex then I'll need. It is a quality product but there are other good ecu's nowadays. I'm going to use a DTA next time around but that said it's getting very hard to make 'the best choice'

There are a few ecu's that are very versatile. As far as making a car go quickly, Motec isnt anything special.

And TBH, it isnt any easier than some other ecu's Ive used.

In fact, having fitted a couple of Haltech ecu's lately, I'm finding them very good, and a damn sight cheaper than the Motec !

Well, it's a fact that good ecu's come from Melbourne and maybe true that the guys at Haltech used to be partners at Motec.
