I was travelling back from Leeds to Glasgow last weekend when my 106 GTI started making a ticking noise under acceleration, then it sounded like it was running on two cylinders then it lost power.
The RAC brought me home, there was no smoke, no bang and it will still turn over but sounds dreadful, there is plenty of oil and water in it, can anyone suggest what has happened?
I am no mechanic by any means but I would like someone who has a clue to give me there opinion, and perhaps suggest something it may be from my description before I put it into a garage.
Thanks alot any advice is MUCH appreciated

Way too many possibilities here which is likely why no one has replied.
One possibility is that the ticking was the start of cam belt failure. It may not have failed completely but has jumped some teeth.
If you are going to do work yourself you just have to start stripping until you find some clues.
If this work is not your thing then find a trusted garage. If you don't know one then post on here your location and ask for recommendations.
Sorry can't help more.

Thanks for your reply,
You are indeed correct in your assumption of a cambelt slipping, my neighbour is a mechanic and he carried out a compression test last night the results are not good and all signs point to cambelt slipping.
The engine is to be stripped by him in order to assess the damage done.
Keeping my fingers crossed that its not damaged everything!
Thanks again
Kenny
