Why do diesel exhaust pipes point downwards?

The question is in the subject. Is it a legal requirement? I'd like to put a large bore tailpipe on my diesel Escort.

Firstly, its a Diesel. Secondly, its an Escort. Finally, explain "Large bore tailpipe"? Backbox? Clip-on tail design...

Just a backbox, to listen to whilst going under bridges, through tunnels etc.
Don't do it, it might put you off cars and the only thing that will cure it will be a TVR V8 or a Lamborghini V12... And if you own a diesel Escort, that might be a stretch too far...
There is a guy near me with a 4inch tailpipe on a 1.5l diesel corsa. I've never heard worse.

Forced into a diesel due to a high mileage commute. Just trying to make it a bit more interesting.
That's fair enough. I'd say get yourself a nice induction kit, induction noise will be much better than exhaust noise. A friend has a 1.2 Clio with a K&N induction kit, and it sounds sweet for a little car...

IIRC the fumes need to be directed downwards so the carbon particles don't fly off too much... Which is why Peugeot made a fake exhaust trm for their sporty HDIs.
My Hdi 306 one points straight out the back.
Was looking at a 207 though and the Hdi one has a really convincing back pointing one but about 4 inches in it blanks off for a down pointer. Very tidy and clever.
Going to modify my exhaust back box to point down like it, and then put the tail pipe end back on for aesthetics... makes so much more sense and means you can run it more smoky without blacking your car up or leaving a smoke screen

Wouldn't that make a tremendous din all the time since diesels don't have throttles?
Mind you, it sounds like you're after a tremendous din so it might be right up your street. Thankfully, I am not

I put a Pipercross foam filter in my Hdi 306 and it was MORE refined than the standard paper panel... I doubt the performance is substantially better either unless it's huge. The turbo acts to dull the sound, though an NA diesel with a K&N sounds unearthly, but only ever like a tractor.
My brother put a Cossie Piper cone on his Tdi 306 and it just sounds a bit more whistly and thats about it.
The only way to make a diesel sound beefy is to have a decent fat bore exhust but I'm not sure on the benefits to exhaust gasses cooling too quickly and stagnating before the exhaust tip. Diesels hardly flow huge volumes anyway so a 2" pipe is probably excessively big for the requirements.
