Can anyone out there explain to me (in laymans terms please) how the Toyota 1.8 litre unit fitted in the Elise R works. What does VVLT-i actually mean and why does the thing go ballistic above 6,000 rpm?

VVLT stands for Variable Valve Lift and Timing. Basically it is equipped with a clever camshaft with moving lobes or something of the sort, that come into play past a certain amount of revs to give the engine more air and more advanced timing to increase efficiency when it spins really fast.

Take a look here:

Is it cam phased like the Vanos on BMW's, AND it also has lift by having secondary cam lobes for a secondary high-lift setting for very high rpm...

Thanks guys. Alex, the link was particulally helpful in explaining things - 'a picture paints a thousand words' and all that rubbish !
