Too rusty for a rebore?

Hi all,

I drive a supra and due to a combination of high mileage and boost (1.4 bar) the rings are shot and I burn loads of oil.

I've sourced another block which I plan on building up with forged pistons and other goodies (so I can run more boost) before swapping it into the car in a month or two. However, it's been sitting outside in the rain for a few weeks and the cylinders were full of water when I collected it. It's an iron block, so the bores have gone pretty damn rusty.

How do I judge whether too much material has been corroded for a rebore to be successful? What is the best way of cleaning the excess rust out so I can remove the pistons (push them out through the top after the crank is removed)? I don't want to damamge the bores any more than they are already.

The engine was free so if it's knackered it's not the end of the world, I just don't know how to judge it as this is my first engine build.

This shouldn't be a problem as a few weeks of water won't damage cast iron badly - it'll be little more than surface rust. If you're not sure just get the block rebored to the largest standard rebore size. If the engine was free the chances are it'll need a rebore anyway - and the rest!

Yeah i wouldnt worry too much, itll need the rebore anyway after being left out.
Just check the bore diameter so you can see if its already been done at some stage, before you invest any time/money into it.

OK, that's pretty much what I thought. Everything except the block, rods and crank will be brand new, and I'm getting the crank and rods machined anyway.

Should not be a problem, the engine builder of my 240Z Samuri (Spike Anderson) always left blocks outside for a year or so to 'weather' before doing his magic.
