Any one have any thoughts/experiences with the emerald ecu's?

If they are negative maybe email them to avoid name/shame.

From my laymans point of view its looks ok, but what do I know?

Dead easy, virtually intuitive ECU with enough features for the professional but easy enough to grasp for the amateur. Coupled with Dave Walker's excellent book on mapping you really can't go too far wrong.

Cheers Jools, got the book today.

Looking further ahead, but love learning and preparing.

I take it you could map this, if I got it running on a base map?

Do you know if it will fire the P38 4x2 coil packs directly?
Maybe I would have to connect them in pairs?

Yeh I've mapped a 5 litre race Tuscan today on emerald, but running the dizzy.
emerald dont do a 4 output ignition driver set so wasted spark isn't an off the shelf option .. the boards can be modified though and I know 350matt had such an example on his modified wedge.

Best speak to emerald about modifying a board for you. Mongoose had a chat with dave walker at autosport and dave suggested it wasn't high on their agenda right now (or then) .. and i know dave is very busy with mapping (taking work for october) so that implies Karl is also uber busy. Worth a call though. You can try something like a megasquirt which will save you a bundle on initial costs but they are far from intuitive on mapping so you'd lose out on dyno hours unless you did a lot of the fuelling stuff out on the road yourself (entirely possible with MS of course).

How do you manage with the ignition on the Emerald Cerberas Joo?

I take it the emerald wont drive the simple and effective ford EDIS system then?. Look up TUXMAN over on ultima, he's got one.
If you really want to learn the nuts & bolts (or should I say wires and resistors) of EFI, then I would suggest taking a look at megasquirt.

Karl has to modify each unit, it's not a std emerald.

Ive used Emerald.

I had one of the origonal ECUs some 10 years ago.
They were very helpful & as you know Dave is probably the most knowledgeable guy on engine tuning & set up thats available to us.

I had trouble with mine after a car swap some 5 years ago. A fault was found with the ECU & repaired FOC!! The only trouble was it took 12 months to turn around after numerous phone calls & chassing. As I still have trouble with the injection I purchased another make (Kronenburg - KMS).

Conclusion.
Good unit especially considering cost.
Karl can tweek/modify to suit special requirements.
Very helpful & knowledgable.
After sales is very bad (linked to work load I know).
Best to live near them or be prepared to travel.

I had some email contact with Dave recently and he was pretty responsive and helpful. Unfortunately the engine I was preparing for the install turned out to be only the top half of an engine - so it's all on hold till I get mine out of the car (post EuroHoon). But most of my enquiries were answered pretty quick, and ended up with more questions.

I think sharing the same name helped ;-)
