Gutless wonder - 1.9 dci engine
Discussion
Hi all.
My Vivaro 1.9 dci (same as the renault engine) electronic common rail injection 100bhp is now gutless. Where it used to pull a track car and trailer at 100mph it now barely pulls itself at 80
It doesn't smoke, all the filters are new but it just won't pull. The only thing I can think of is that for over a year it did 3 x 1 mile journeys (two from cold) a day. I'm wondering if It may have a clogged exhaust? Is there any way of checking for this?
Another point is that it's no longer economical; used to achieve 45 and now struggles to get over 30.
Cheers in advance!

If there is an air mass metering unit, have it checked. Diesels need it for emission reasons these days, and it seems they can go wrong at an alarming rate. Some can live with the sensor disconnected, many don't. Sensor provides imput to the ECU. It is worth a try to disconnect it and see if the acceleration is back (mine did, but it was a bmw 2.0 diesel engine in a Rover 75).

A place i used to work at bought a low mileage Ren Extra, It only ever did 1-2miles trips so it never got hot, the first time it went on a long run all the crap that had formed in the Rad and pipes leading up to it deicded to spread itself all around the system, apart from costing a fortune to fix it buggerd it up big time!!
Is it still drivable, If so check to see if the wastgate is still connected, I circlip dropped of mine so I had no boost presure but it was still drivable, If the intercooler has gone it will probably run rough as F***!!
The other thing that went on mine was a anti spike thing by the Ecu that had a tiny split in, but that made it run rough as hell too!
Oh, and mine isn't a renault!!

I have a 1.9 120dci which exibited similar problems including a drastic fall in fuel cosumption. After much to-ing and fro-ing with the dealer, who despite taking lots of time could not find anything wrong. The problem finally manifested itself whilst towing under full load when a dash light came on. The fault code was logged as a turbo pressure / pressure release valve. This had the effect of not allowing full throttle and effectively the engine was running with no boost. Beaware, normal dealer diagnostics will not pick this up unless they can put the engine under 'full' load. Check the valve -best of luck.

Any luck speaking to your mate Mr Whippy?
Power is not a problem at the moment as the gearbox has just gone

No not yet. He's the grounds man at work and wasn't in the other week (holiday maybe?) so I'll catch him when I go back.
Gearbox gone? Sounds fun. French stuff eh.
Cheers
