Any thoughts on where I can lay my hands on some air intake tubing with a smooth interior, about 4inches diameter, heat resistant, flexible?

There has to be a market for this kind of thing...

Demon tweeks do the very thing youre looking for , made from silicon with either a single or dual layer and a helical spring inside.

In the States allot of folks use 4" PVC plumbing pipe from the hardware store.

Got to keep it away from exhaust and turbos though.

I may be too late but central heating ducting is very light, heat proof and squashable/bendable but most of all very cheap. I picked up some off cuts (one six feet long) for nothing from a building site !
You need a large diameter for a big motor as they gulp a lot of air on full bore, I mean a LOT of air. The ram effect at 100mph isn't enough to feed a well sorted Mini of you use small bore pipe .

You need to make sure that the inside surface is smooth and not corrugated, ACT supply smooth bore flexible pipe.
