I realise it's not exactly a high performance car but this is an emergency! Went to start my Golf 1.8 Driver and the battery, handbrake light etc came on and the LCD bit on the dash said "In 02" but when I turn the key, nothing - there is a slight noise that sounds like slow air blowing (no I had turned the fans off) but other than that, nothihng.

Car has an immobiliser which I turned off in the usual way. Is it just the starter motor that has gone??

Jump the starter solenoid with 12 volts and see if the startoer engages, if it does, then take a volt meter and see if you are getting voltage down to the starter, just trace the wiring back its very easy.
