I took the cylinder head off a 2286 Rover petrol engine on Saturday with the intention of replacing it with a tweaked cylinder head (ported, unleaded compatible valve seats and high compression ratio). I was cleaning the deposits off the piston crowns when I noticed that the pistons were a little wobbly in the bores. I took the pistons out and used one to push the top piston ring into the bore a little way below the lip that had formed. Piston ring gap in the region of 2.5mm - Rover manual specifies 0.015" to 0.020"
I haven't measured the bores but am anticipating the worst...
Should I get it:
rebored?
relinered?
replacement block?
