X flow engine squeak/chirping
Discussion
Help. I have a Kent cross flow engine with a squeak. Over the years everthing bar the oil pump has been changed. The carbs are 40 DCOE s and came from another car with no issues. Its sounds, after extensive listening, to be an induction noise. At low revs, pulling away from a junction, it squeaks like mad, loudly, at higher rpm just touching the throttle it doesn’t make a noise until you accelerate and then it sounds as though its chirping as the rpm is faster. Can it be the shape of the inlet manifold? Is it the O rings between the carbs and the inlet manifold?? Or is it the shape of the piston (combustion chamber). It does appear to be getting louder and to be honest is driving me nuts.
Sounds like an induction leak. This will be happening at all revs it's just that the higher revs or high load are making it more pronounced.
Look for a leak using an unlit propane blow torch. Move it around all induction joints at tick-over. A rise in revs will show you have found the leak.
