guys a friend has a auto box on his 95 galaxy. At the weekend it lost drive alltogether.
two years ago he had the same problem and ford advised him on a new box, which he duly replaced.
Now the same thing has happenend again hes is obviously worried about taking it to ford and them suggesting the same thing again.
I thought these were g/boxes were simple with little to go wrong? surely it can only be solenoids? Haynes advise only ford do the work- it this right?
When left to go cold the car will drive, but only for a very short while?
any ideas? also anyone no a good specialist around the camberley way?
youre help is greatly appreciated!!

If the car moves cold then mechanically and electrically the transmission is notionally OK. Suspect that the transmission is grossly overfilled.

I would drain the transmission fluid and set the fluid level very precisely, then have the dealer clear the fault codes and log whatever codes reappear. Then they can fix the problem.

HTH.

Thanks guys for youre responses!
I cant believe the g/box is overfilled... the car has been running fine for two years... and my friend hasnt added fluid as everytime he looks at the haynes manual for the transmission it says 'Take to Dealer'!!
Do you know how to check the level on this box?
Is it possible it could be low on fluid? would this give the same symptoms?
Any ideas greatly appreciated!!

If a car moves on the flat but not on slopes it is underfilled. Otherwise it is about OK.

If the oil is severely degraded it will let the transmission slip excessively both by the addtive pack breaking down and a change in viscosity.

Overfilled transmissions have the oil churned and frothed up which then results in an inability to make pressure to the clutch packs and hence slip.

thanks for youre help guys, the box was sealed and has now duly been replaced with one won from ebay... however 46 quids worth of 'special' galaxy auto g/box fluid bought from ford, and the car moves though all gears but seems to 'slip' as it enages them? Any ideas?! or have we bought a dud?....!
youre help is once again appreciated!!
