My Xantia recently started making a ticking noise coming from the engine. Sometimes it goes away and sometimes it doesn't. I suspect it could be one of the tensioners has failed. I have bought a cam belt kit and intend to change it over the weekend, Is there anything I need to know, for example special tools or nasty surprises etc.
I would appreciate advise from anyone ho has changed cambelt on one of these engines before.
It is a HDi90. DW10AT engine.
Thanks
Mike

Does it tick at any rpm?

My Hdi ticks between 1500>3000rpm under power, and dissapears after 3000rpm pretty sharpish. Think thats the fuel pump.

The only other ticking I know of is the lower aux-belt pulley's have a rubber transmission from the centre to the pulley, to absorb vibrations. These are a known weak point on the 306 Hdi90 at least, and the part fails and they can tick quite loudly.
The part has been updated and costs ~ £110 inc vat from Peugeot. Not sure if the Xantia uses the same pulley though!?

Is your kit Citroen, or a non OE?

I did my belt a few weeks ago on 72k. Didn't do the tensioner or roller, but did the waterpump. Have a feeling either the roller or tensioner is on it's way though at that mileage, and I can hear something being a bit noisy down that end of the engine... not sure if a worn roller bearing ticks... last 3 I've known to be worn just whirr and metallicy buzz a bit, especially around 1100rpm +/- 100rpm...

Sounds to me like the accumulator Sphere is up the duff, About £15 for a new one, 5 mins to swap, They should tick about every 30 secs, if they tick every 5-10 they are past it.

If it is the main accumulator, it will tick a lot faster if you touch the brakes whilst the car is idling. It's important to keep them in good order because:
(a) that's your emergency reservoir of braking effort if there is a failure in the hydraulic system and
(b) they absorb the shock of the pressure relief valve shutting (the tick). As the valve shuts, a pressure wave travels back down the pipe to the pump. A healthy accumulator will absorb a lot of this but a dead one won't. too many can damage the pump and even fatigue the steel pipe coming out of it!

Thanks for the help guys. The ticking noise is strictly engine related. The speed of the ticking increases with increasing engine speed. The ticking from the suspension relief valve occurs every 20-30 seconds or so. As far as I am concerned the suspension is functioning correctly.
I will check the aux pulley(s) when I do the cambelt change. By the way the car has covered 130k and the cambelt was changed sometime in 2004. I have not had the car long so I want to change it, purely for peace of mind. The cambelt kit is a Conti kit. £48 fron Eurocarparts
I am a competent DIY mechanic so it shouldn't be too big a problem. Any ideas how long it takes (ballpark figure)
Oh, just one more thing. Will the aux pulley off a pre HDi Xantia fit. If so I will pop down to the breakers yard and get one there.
Thanks
Mike

Not sure on the aux pulley.

XUD9 > DW10 on the Peugeot 306 Tdi > Hdi is considerably different.

ECP will probably do an aux pulley. Peugeot's used to be ~ £55 but is now double that as the part has been uprated as the early ones prematurely failed.

Again, you'd need to check for specific Citroen parts wrt XUD9 and DW10 in Xantia's.
