as per thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=273968&f=66&h=0

i have a new engine in my recently deceased tiger super six.

The new engine is a direct swap, zetec for zetec. But apon striping down both engine we relised that the flywheel on the old engine was lightened and balanced. The replacement engine came with a standard flywheel. The clutch was not transferable so we fitted the lightened unit to the new engine.

unfortunatly now the unit is unbalanced. above 2400 rpm to about 4000 it creates a vibration not disimilar to a hand sander.

Can anyone tell me if this is a serious problem and that i should not drive the car or if it can be sorted at a later date

thanks again for your help.

An engine that is out of balance won't produce as much power, and it'll wear out sooner and in extreme cases may even suffer a catastrophic failure. You really want to sort the problem out.

Either balance the new stuff to zero balance or fit the stock componants. No engine likes to be out of balance and if you can feel it then somethings very wrong.

They will want the piston and rod assembly and shells etc. Guestimate on about £150 maximim, money well worth spending. Being a zetec most of the piston balances will counter out so it could be a lot less.

Sounds about right, they will want the full cranktrain and the clutch pressure plate (it has a small effect on flywheel balance i think / would expect).
