Whic engines can be connected to RWD?
Discussion
Forgive me if thi post seems a little dim witted, but looking at the influx of kitcars floating about today, I was wondering which engines can be used to make a RWD car?
I know theres a lot of 7 replicas (caterfields/waseterhams ) which utilise engines from FWD cars, but obviously have been mated up and made into RWD...which engines can be used and how?

I would think that it would be up to the bolt pattern of the engine to transmission, if the front wheel drive engine and RWD bolt patterns are the same then it will work. I doubt that many of the bolt patterns are different between the two types. Any engines that were never used in RWD would be the ones that would be difficult as they would not have a rear wheel drive trans made to work with them but this could be over come with a bespoke adapter plate.
Doing the opposite (RWD to FWD) would be more difficult as some minor changes, for example changing the oil filter mounting location or where the generator is mounted, may have been made to accomidate the transverse mounting.
Exhaust manifolds would probably need to be changed to the RWD version.
I'm almost positive the vlc has covered this topic with one of his threads, but it's too early in the morning for me to want to locate it..

Depends what you are looking at.The Ford range all fit to the type 9 or MT75 box.The Duratec will fit with a different bellhousing.Vauxhalls all fit with either a diferent bellhousing to the ford box or direct to the manta box and I know of people to use the V6 jag/ford engine and the V6 Vauxhall.
Are you meaning the Zetec or the earlier sierra twin cam.The Sierra engine is a bit tricky if you want to mod them,as not much about.Although as cheap as chips for an engine as you'll get a free car for it for a crisp £20.Duratec and Zetec conversions are available from www.raceline.co.uk,for the sumps and other ancillaries

Practical Performance car did a feature on the audi inline 5 a couple of months back, and suitable gearboxes for them IIRC,
I'll have a look when I get home (assuming I remember)
many kit cars in the US are now using a Mazda MX5 (Miata in the US) running gear.....the engine gearbox and rear end is all pointing the right way to start with.....1.8 16v giving about 140Bhp in standard trim is a good start.....all ford petrol engines are now of Mazda/Yamaha origins, so it aint as bad as it sounds.....if you get something thats pre 1992 you will avoid the Cat set-up......but I dunno if the MX5's were made before then???...
