What exactly does an engine rebuild entail, and what can I expect to pay? The car in question is a 1995 Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC

Taking it all apart, seeing if anything is wrong, repairing and putting it back together again.

Sounds like fun, but I fear I may not have the skills.

Is this worth doing to prevent anything going wrong, or is it mostly a "whoops, the engine is shagged, let's try rebuilding it" type jobby?

On a honda it's probably not worth it so long as it's been properly serviced, unless you do have a problem with knocking or low compression etc etc. My old Accord on a 93/L plate lasted 195k before the rest of the car died arond it. The problem with that engine was it was so oil tight everything corroded onto the engine.

Basically, my (jap import) Honda has done 120K. It runs really well, but I don't want it to die on its arse either...

Jap engines..especially vtec systems are bloody solid as long as they have been serviced on time. Any signs of blue or black smoke will be bad. Blue (burning oil), black (running lean, more common for turbos), white (i thnk is head gasket failure. If you get her up on a rolling road, you can see how healthy she is.
If she needs a rebuild, or you decide to run more power, take her to a specialist. The vtec system is complicated, so i would only trust a specialist. Alternatively, if you'r worried, source a reconditioned engine.

Sounds like a baby, just run in. Leave it alone until you get a problem. My saab clocked appx 320k without major issues

I had a Rover 216 a while ago (with the B16 single cam honda engine), had 126K on the clock and the engine sounded like it was brand new, shame about the rest of the car!!

The honda b16 engines are dohc engines not single cams! Think the single cam engines were D series engines.

Plenty of regular oil changes, warm it up properly before you hoof it, don't do short school runs where it never ever gets warm. And it'll last forever.
