Hi all,

Can anyone tell me kind of compression ratios turbo diesel engines usually run? A friend of mine is thinking of turboing his landy (and yes he does know that it won't last long ) and is wondering what he'll have to do about the CR.

Cheers

Same as the non-turbo. Otherwise it won't start. Diesels don't have the problem with detonation that you get in a spark ignition engine so high compression isn't a problem.

Turbodiesels normally have a CR 1 to 1.5 points lower than their non turbocharged bretheren. Detonation is not a problem but cracking heads, cracking pistons and blowing the flame ring out of the head gasket can be if the peak firing pressure gets too high.

Cheers for the info,
he's planning on running fairly low boost so should be able to get away with laving it all alone then?

Is he trying to turbo the old 2.5 N/A diesel? I'm sure it can be done, although would it not make sense to put a 200tdi in, or just the 2.5td, the 2.5td would be a straight swap.

In that case, if its for the sheer hell of it, why not, you do hear some horror stories about the 2.5td splitting blocks and heads, but i've never had any trouble with them. You should point him to

there, or when i last used it are loads of people who know everything worth knowing about them. Theres probably someone there who's done it before.

Personally i reckon he should have put in a 4.6 RV8 before thinking about fitting a turbo.

About 20:1 usually, depends on the engine.
