Hi guys, just a quick question - I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that if a set of spark plugs get sooted up due to the engine running too rich, it's possible to take them out and run them over a gas burner to burn off the deposits and bring their performance back up again. Is this true??

Yes in theory, no in practice.

I wouldnt recommend it - plugs are only a few quid each anyway - just change em? failing that - my local tuner will use a stiff crush to knock off the carbon, regap and whack em back in - works a treat - try that?

edit - by crush i mean brush!

clean them in petrol if you absolutely must, and give them a very light rub over.

as mentioned, just get yourself a new set of plugs.

I've got no problem with whacking a new set of plugs in, it's just the way the advice was phrased when I read it, it seemed like a quick and easy way to put a bit of life back in the plugs without any expense and the hassle of going to the plug shop.

Usually these kind of things that seem to good to be true usually are!!!

Thanks for the knowledge guys.

Tom.
