Hi folks,

I am a new member and would appreciate advice from TVR experts. I have bought a 1970 Reliant Scimitar fitted with a 4.5 V8 built by V8 Developments, essentially to TVR spec. Not sure of the power and torque outputs yet.

My car has a T5 gearbox from a Griffith and it's noisy. Sounds like bearing noise in all gears except 4th, loudest in 5th and reverse. Do I need a rebuild, or are they "all like that sir"?

Some info to help diagnosis:

- Rear oil seal was leaking badly, so it could have been run low on oil (now replaced)
- I have changed the oil (using ATF, which I believe is correct?). Noise unchanged
- It has a custom-made cross member to mount the gearbox to the Scimitar chassis. There is rubber in the mounting, but if this is too hard would it transmit noise?
- There is very little carpet/insulation etc above the box
- Gear-change, syncromesh etc are perfect. (Sometimes drags into reverse, but I think this is a clutch issue).
- Don't know how many miles the box has done

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

John

Not aware of any noise from the T5 in My Griff or Tuscans I have been in. Is it the original Griff Spec ? there are some square cut T5 boxes about which are very noisy. Dragging into reverse is a normal trait, you need to snik 5th or 1st before reverse.

Steve,

I don't know what spec it is. Seller informed me that it is a Griffith T5 box; that's all. On reflection though, the noise could be gears more than bearings. Noise type and volume varies between on and off power. I think bearing noise would stay more consistent? Any further comments/advice appreciated.

Is 4th 1:1? If so, might be a clue as to where the noise is comming from.
