My chim has just suffered tyhe engine dying when the fans cut in.

(see thread here)

basically the air feed to the AFM was disconnected. Why would the process of the fans kicking in with a disconnected air feed cause such a dramatic drop in revs?

Is it because the fans blow hot air across the engine bay and the AFM is sucking in hot air rather than cooler air?

(Please excuse my ignorance of the internal combustion engine )

AFAIK many AFM have temperature sensors in them. AFMs will measure airflow but the essential data is the mass flow. To get the mass flow the ECU needs to know the temperature of the air being sucked in and then calculate the fuelling requirements.
Its possible that the response time of the temperature sensor was not quick enough for the arrival of hot air and the mixture went AWOL??

As an aside, running with the air filter disconnected is an extremely bad move and can lead to premature engine wear, which will continue long after the filter has been reconnected. Make sure it's connected as soon as possible with no leaks.

Itll also lead to premature failure of the Maf due to dirt/oil contamination.

Don't worry as soon as I found it it was sorted! I'm just a bit miffed that this was left off after some work had been done on it. If any long term damage has been done I'll be straight back to the garage. (Who are aware of this and have been most helpful to their credit).
