Off to help out a mate saturday working on his MR2 Turbo which is currently off the road. (isnt that amusing, me going around in the TVR to help mate with broken down Jap-mobile )

anyways, over the phone he has old me the car is overheating very quickly (ie within 2 mins of start up). The coolant level drops each time. Another weird thing is the heater fans are only blowing luke warm air even when the engine is at a very high temperature.

Thermostat been replaced to no effect. Sounds like a pipe somewhere may have gone to me. Any ideas?

Where is the coolant going?? If none is visble and the oil level is not rising then I suggest he has a big bad airlock on the cooling system, which in turn would be the reason why there is not heat from the heater matrix.

Find the highest point of the system and give it a good old bleed

Sounds kinda like a broken fan belt or maybe water pump failure. But it could be as simple as an air lock.

I second Peter's idea of water pump or drive belt failure. If airlocked the system level would not drop all the time, unless clearing the airlock.

Oh, and the other problem is......its not a TVR

I don't disagree with either of the above, but my comments were in relation to no visible fluid. If coolant is pi**ing out somewhere then it won't be an airlock.

Do check the oil level just to make sure it isn't rising!!!!

I am being dumb here - if the oil level is rising then what does that mean?

If the oil level is rising then coolant is probably leaking into the block--gives oil a slightly creamy look--bad news

Check behind the turbo.
You may have to remove the turbo heat shield and/or the oil filter to have a peek.
Youre looking for a water pipe thats made of rubber, and joins two steel pipes together.
Had a similar problem on my celica (same engine).
The pipe has a fibre heat shield to prevent the turbo radiating heat onto it and perishing the rubber, but eventually the shield deteriorates and the pipe starts to leak.
Only fix is to remove the turbo( not poss to get at it otherwise) and replace the pipe with silicon hose and a new fabricated heat shield.
Even wrapping it in aluminium foil would help to reduce the heat effects on the pipe.
