Quite a few guys around who just engineer little engines for the sake of it, they don't have an end use apart from the pleasure of running them.
Group in the US called M.I.C.E Minature Internal Combustion Engines do loads, do a google.

I'd love to have the skill to make an engine like that, always wanted to. think it'll be one of those things for retirement time though!

I can feel a 1200cc V8 coming on... 2 CBR 600 heads on a custom block with stock pistons/rods...250hp?...

I remember seeing on Top Gear some years ago a scale Ferrari V or flat 12. It was about 1/10 or 1/8 scale but a perfect scale including the working engine. I was amazed that such a thing could be built yet my friends first comment was that the rev counter needle was a bit wobbly!
