I have just purchased a Westfield with a 1.8 Zetec with 7K (genuine) on the clock, should I change the timing belt or is it ok for a few years yet? If it does need changing are any special tools needed, in other words is it a resonably straight forward job?

The life of a timing belt is usually measured as the minimum of around 60K miles or 6 years (roughly) so I would say if the engine is younger than this, the belt will be fine.
