A while ago I mentioned a knocking noise on my Yaris when turning and a I felt it might be and a number og you suggested CV joints. Then the tire fitter suggested it but looked at the gater as send it was fine but need joints replacing. Dad took it for its MOT and apparently bothe gaters have deteroated and both drive shafts need replacing. Cost ... well I heard 1000 at which point panic struck so they or above. So thats that problem fixed and luckly for me with 8 days left on the warranty.

Just wondering if my driving or what would cause damage to the drive shafts?

Possibly, but CV joints need to be lubricated with a special grease and when the gaters (boots) go bad the grease goes away and the CV joints die in a big hurry. Also if water finds it's way in it will do the same.

Just the boots went worn when the tire fitter stuck his head under the car to have a look. What i'm more worried about is the drive shafts. Is there any thing that I may have done to have caused them to go e.g. to hard starts (only a 1 litre) or being a bit agressive on corners or living down a rough lane.

It is quite common for CV joints to fail and they are not expensive to replace. I'd expect a bill for a couple of hundred quid to replace all four; less if you only need to replace some of them.

Try ebay or local scappy for some, shouldn't be that expensive.

You have two half shafts, each one has a CV joint at each end. Four CV joints in total. It is unlikely that they have all failed and they can be replaced individually. The drive shafts are just plain iron bars and you can't 'do' half shafts, you just ake them off, replace the CV joints and refit them. Cheap, easy, quick, probably couple of hundred quid certainly nowhere near four figures.

There is nothing you have done by way of driving style (or lack of style) that will damage either the boots or the joints. They are working quite hard and will fail quite soon if the boot splits. The grease is thrown out and water/grit gets in, an altogether bad combination.

That's obviously not RAC gold star warranty they refused my driveshaft replacement. Normally a warranty only covers stuff that doesn't wear out/break.

Yep, it's a Toyota 3 year warranty with 8 days left.
